According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer in children and teens (ages 0-19) is rare, with an estimated 15,590 people within this age group to be diagnosed in 2021.
Most common types of cancer
The National Cancer Institute lists the most common types of cancer in children and teenagers in the United States.
Among children and teens ages 0 to 19, the most common types include:
- leukemias
- brain and central nervous system tumors
- lymphomas
In children ages 0-14, the most common types include the three mentioned above as well as:
- neuroblastoma
- kidney tumors
- malignant bone tumors
Lastly, in teenagers ages 15 to 19, years old the most common types of cancer include:
- brain and central nervous system tumors
- lymphomas
- leukemias
- thyroid cancer
- gonadal germ cell tumors
- malignant bone tumors
Good news
The outlook for children and teens with cancer has seen improvement over the last few decades! According to the National Cancer Institute, the number of deaths due to cancer among children and adolescents decreased by 50% from 1975 to 2017. Thankfully these numbers have changed because of the development of modern medicines and treatments.
