There are Four Stages of Sleep

REM Sleep gets all the credit as the “restorative” stage of sleep. In reality, Deep Sleep the fourth stage, is what you need to wake up feeling refreshed, restored, and non-drowsy.

Initially your body goes through a transition period between wakefulness & sleep. The amount of time it takes to fall asleep differs for everyone, though on average it takes 5-15 minutes for an adult to fall asleep.

Light Sleep is where the majority of sleep time is spent.

REM sleep is Rapid Eye Movement Sleep. EEG results show increased brain activity, erratic breathing patterns, and an elevated heart rate. If you wake up remembering your dreams, REM is the dream stage.

What happens to your body when you don’t get enough sleep
