Stretches to Help You Relax Before Bed

The best thing you can do before bed is to unplug and wind down. Many times we spend the last hours of our night on social media, playing video games, working… you name it. We don’t make enough time to relax and clear our minds. Therefore, I am going to share with you a few stretches to help you relax before bed. The best part is, is that you can do these from the comfort of your bed!

4 Stretches to Help You Relax Before Bed

These stretches are from Sleep Advisor and the Hospital for Special Surgery

1. Knee to Chest: knee to chest stretch

You can do this stretch lying down in bed. Firstly, lie down on your back and extend both legs. Next, grab behind one knee and gently pull your leg to your chest. Hold this stretch for about 30 seconds and switch legs.

2. Child’s Pose Stretch:

You can perform this stretch on your bed as well. Begin on your hands and knees. Next, slowly sit back on your heels and extend your arms. Walk your hands forward as far as is comfortable and relax your head between your arms. If you cannot extend your arms, place them at your sides. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, return to the starting position on your hands and knees and repeat 3 times.

3. Spinal Twist: spinal twist

To perform this stretch, lie down on your back and extend both arms out to the side. Cross one leg over the opposite side of the body (left leg over the right side) and allow it to fall toward the floor (or bed). Try to keep both arms shoulders flat on the bed or floor. Hold this position for 10 seconds and return to natural. Do this three times each on both sides of the body.

4. Cat-Cow: cat-cow stretch

Similar to the child’s pose stretch, begin on your hands and knees. Make sure your hands are aligned with your shoulders and your knees with your hips. Firstly, arch your back like a cat by tightening the abs, squeezing your booty, and tucking in your tailbone. Hold this for 10 seconds. Then, relax your lower back, letting it sag toward the bed, and rotate your tailbone upwards. Look forward in order to stretch the front of your neck. Hold this cow position for 10 seconds and return to the starting position. Repeat this flow 5 to 10 times.
