Keep Your Skin Hydrated this Winter

Keep Your Skin Hydrated this Winter

As winter approaches and the dry air blows in, it becomes harder to keep our skin soft and hydrated. Most people associate acne with oily skin, but dry skin causes breakouts as well. This occurs, because the skin produces excess oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. Consequently, this leads to clogged pores. In high school, I believed that if I let my skin dry out, my acne would dry out with it—I was wrong. When I hydrated my skin daily, it broke out less often. This article provides tips to help you keep your skin hydrated this winter.

Find the right cleanser and moisturizer

Use a gentle, fragrance free cleanser to wash your face around 2 times per day. Moisturize your skin after each wash as well. If you have combination skin or more oily skin, use an oil-free, water-based moisturizer.

Don’t let the shower dry your skin out

The American Academy of Dermatology Association gives a few pointers on how to keep your shower from worsening your dry skin. They recommend closing the bathroom door, using warm rather than hot water, shortening your shower time, and moisturizing right after gently drying your skin. These skin tips apply to your entire body.

Vitamins for hydrated skin

According to Healthline, vitamins C and D are some of the best for dry skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects the skin and is essential for collagen production. In studies that Healthline referenced, people who used vitamin C in combination with other nutrients had improved skin hydration. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and had stronger research tied to its influence on skin hydration. For instance, some research revealed an association between low blood levels of vitamin D and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Vitamin D supplements have been shown to improve symptoms of these skin-drying conditions as well.
